Nils Luderowski passed away in November 2022. He specialized in residential architecture and design in an Adirondack style. His full-service studio offered architectural services including site planning, interior design, furniture design, and custom artisan work with local contractors for 25 years.
Nils spent his formative years in Stockholm, Sweden, where he studied mathematics, interior architecture, and furniture design. During this time he traveled extensively, paying particular attention to the traditional wood architecture of Northern & Central Europe, specifically that of Scandinavia and Switzerland. He undertook his formal education at Pratt Institute of Art & Design in Brooklyn, NY, where he further incorporated American movements such as the Craftsman and Prairie styles into his developing aesthetic.
From 1975 to 1996, Nils ran a design studio in New York City. As part of his work in New York, he taught Introduction to Design for 10 years at Parsons School of Design. In the mid 1990s Nils relocated to Keene, NY, in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Mountains, where he lived with his family in an 1825 Federal Style farmhouse.
Nils pioneered the New Adirondack Style of architecture, a blend of Shingle, Craftsman, Prairie, and regional expressions, while maintaining an eye for modern living requirements and technology. His structures are thoughtfully designed to fit their surroundings, as if a part of the natural landscapes themselves, without losing the rich texture, color, and form that make his designs distinctive.
Nils' work can be found dotting the many lakes, rivers, and mountains of the Adirondacks. Past projects include new homes, renovations, additions, restorations, adaptive reuses, and historical renovations. Nils was a registered Architect licensed in New York State and a member of The American Institute of Architects (AIA). His office was located in Keene Valley, New York, in the Adirondack State Park, right next to the legendary Noonmark Diner.
